Thanksgiving is a time that we all look forward to. Between seeing our close friends and family, and looking forward to one of the biggest dinners of the year, how could we not be excited? Although it may seem hard to do, you can be environmentally friendly during this holiday. It may take some creativity, and some planning ahead, but it is definitely possible!
If you’re someone that likes to be green, and try to do their part, you can! Here are a few ideas for throwing a green Thanksgiving party this year.
Think ahead: First of all, you’re going to want to plan ahead by a week or two. Try to figure out how many people will be coming, and how much food you will need. Then, write down everything you need at the grocery store. This will help you save time, gas, and the environment by making less trips to and from the store.
Food: Just because Thanksgiving is known for a big turkey dinner, it doesn’t have to be that way. Fix a vegan or vegetarian dish instead! You can also go to your local Farmer’s Market or use the fruits and vegetables from your garden.
Dishes: Although it may be easier to use paper and plastic, try to bring out your dishes. By giving people dishes and silverware that can be washed, you’re saving a few garbage bags full of trash!
Leftovers: There is no doubt about it you’ll always have leftovers after a Thanksgiving dinner. So, instead of throwing it in the garbage and letting landfills collect with your added garbage bags, be sure to send people home with leftovers or consider putting it in a compost pile in your yard.
Thanksgiving is a great time of year! Enjoy the holiday with your friends and family, and think of other creative ways to give back to the environment. There is always a way, and anyone can do it even if it’s one person at a time!
