Many of us find the daily drudgery of commuting to an office job hard on both our families and ourselves, but many workers are now choosing to opt out of all that and work from home.
Telecommuting, or setting up shop in your own house, is certainly a lot better for the environment than commuting in a car to a workplace that uses lots of energy. Now that mobile communications have become that much better, it is now actually easy to work from pretty much any location.
Going mobile
Mobile broadband, for example, is a great way to get hooked up to the internet and all you need is a laptop or netbook plus a small USB device called a dongle. This picks up the mobile internet signal in the same way as a mobile phone. It works pretty well and is certainly adequate for accessing work remotely.
A home office is also a great environment for exploiting many of the latest and energy-friendly gadgets that make telecommuting the way forward for many of us. An Apple iPad, or one of the many tablet computers like it, is wonderfully portable but the technology on-board also offers very long battery life and an excellent user experience.
Get connected
Again, it is having access to the mobile world that has really transformed the way people work from home. Although traditional broadband is still seen as the most dependable medium for sending and receiving data, mobile options are getting better all the time. It’s always advisable to check on coverage and speed levels you can expect, but going mobile is certainly a great idea for frustrated workers.
And while you’re busy hooking up the mobile network, try investigating the latest MiFi devices. These are small gadgets, a little like routers, which allow you to share your mobile broadband signal with other members of your family. This means that you can share a mobile broadband account with others, so you’ll not only save on money, but they’ll also save on the daily commute too!
