• Operating cost is also typically low, as most of the plants are automated and have few labor personnel on site.
• Hydroelectric dams do not give off carbon dioxide as they don’t burn any fossil fuels. Some carbon dioxide is produced during construction of the project but this is a small fraction of the operating emissions of fossil-fuel electricity generation.
• Hydroelectric schemes create reservoirs which provide facilities for water sports. Multi-use dams are fit for irrigation support agriculture with a steady water supply.
• Bigger hydro dams control floods, which if not controlled would affect people living near the project.

There are two types of energy-recovery systems: heat-recovery ventilators and energy-recovery ventilators. The main difference between the two techniques is on the working of heat exchanger. In an energy-recovery ventilator, the heat exchanger transfers some water vapor with heat energy, while in a heat-recovery ventilator it only transfers the heat.
As an energy recovery ventilator remove some vapors from the outgoing air to the incoming winter air with lesser humidity, the level of humidity of the house remains unchanged. Because of this the heat exchanger core gets warmer and minimizes the problems of freezing.
In summer energy-recovery ventilator help in controlling humidity of the house by moving some water vapor present in the incoming air to the drier air which go out from the house. To keep indoor humidity levels low, it is advisable to turn off the system in very humid weather.

KYOTO, Japan–May 19 2009 –Kyocera Corporation (NYSE:KYO)(TOKYO:6971) announced today that it is supplying solar modules for the new Toyota Prius solar ventilation system, an optional feature for the hybrid car model introduced in Japan by Toyota Motor Corporation (hereafter “Toyota”) on May 18. The system ventilates the air inside of the car by using the electricity generated by the solar module on the rooftop to drive the fans while the car is parked during the daytime. This feature automatically moderates temperature rise inside of the vehicle even during hot seasons.

For this product, Kyocera has implemented strict quality control evaluations, done through rigorous testing to confirm heat resistance, vibration resistance, shock resistance and other aspects, in order to ensure that the quality meets the standards required for onboard components used on the new Prius. For the production of this module, Kyocera has set up a dedicated production line with specialized manufacturing engineers to ensure thorough manufacturing control.

In 1982, Kyocera successfully began mass production of multicrystalline silicon solar cells using the casting method, which has now become the mainstream method used in solar power generating systems today. RIE is a technology utilized to create microscopic ridges on the surface of the cell using plasma and reactive gases. At the same time, a uniform dark navy blue color has been realized. The product responds to customer needs not only in terms of performance but also with its stylish appearance.

As I have said many times over the years solar stocks have a bright future, a very bright future. But investors have to understand a number of things about the current stock market and solar stocks in particular in order to fully take advantage of this long-term trend.

Markets go up and markets go down and these moves usually occur when it is least expected. At the present time solar stocks, the energy industry and the market in general have been in a totally amazing rally since early March 2009. Unfortunately the market and solar stocks have put on the equivalent gains two excellent years (NOT average years) in the past 8 weeks and in my opinion this is simply not sustainable.

As I said in early March in my previous article:

“The Dow Jones Industrial Index recently recorded a twelve year low and the media is FULL of doom and gloom. This terrible news was all over the financial press, accompanied by scenarios of more of the same to come. In fact, the recent survey from the American Association of Individual Investors (AAII) had fallen to the most bearish level in history – 70% of those surveyed felt that the direction of the market would be DOWN over the next 6 months”.

“Nothing is 100% for sure, as we all know. But I think we are either at a significant bottom or very close to it. Everything is so “oversold” at this time, that I think the worst case is that we get a significant rally in what could still be a bear market”.

“Keep in mind that ALL the bad news out there is in media now. We already know all the bad news. Remember that the stock market IS actually a discounting mechanism which looks out 6 to 9 months into the future. We do not need GOOD NEWS to turn the market around, only LESS bad news”.

Well in retrospect that was certainly prescient insight and the market took off with most of the major indexes being up over 25% and some of the foreign markets being up over 35% percent and the solar sector of the market being UP over 70% in JUST 8 WEEKS more than triple the general market indexes.

The Solar Stock Market Sector Then and Now

Then

In March solar stocks had been doing terribly since the second quarter of 2007. Just like the general market, we need to look a little deeper, past the media hype, and see what is actually happening with solar stocks in the market. One of the measures (tools) that I utilize when looking at individual stocks is their 50 day moving average and whether the current price is above (bullish) the 50 day average or below (bearish) the average. It is not the only way to look at stocks and may not be the “best”, but it always seems to give me an idea of which way a stock is heading in the short to medium term and when looking at a specific market sector, what sort of condition that sector is in.

At that time, 3 of the 35 solar stocks I follow are ABOVE (Bullish) their 50 day moving average. On the other hand 92% of the stocks (32 of 35) are BELOW (Bearish) their 50 day moving average. This clearly told me that the solar sector was deeply OVERSOLD and that while it could go lower, it was probably due for at least a “technical” bounce.

Now

At the current time 34 of the 35 solar stocks I follow are ABOVE their 50 day moving average and only one stock (DayStar Technologies – DSTI) is trading below it 50 day moving average. Even in this case, DSTI’s decline was due to an announcement that it is basically running out of cash and will need more financing.

This situation clearly tells me that the solar sector is approaching a condition of being very OVERBOUGHT. It is possible that this is the dramatic of a HUGE new bull market for solar stocks, but as I said in the March article:

“To put it a different way, I do not think ALL the bad news regarding the solar sector is out yet and that there will be future negative surprises, such as earnings disappointments (ENER earlier this week for example), inventory write-offs, and possibly even bankruptcies. The solar sector will probably get carried UP when the general market rallies, but since they will have to work out some additional problems; I do not think their rally will be sustainable”.

However, I DO NOT feel that this is the case and I think there will be a significant correction and the industry will have to digest further bad news that will be coming BEFORE it turns around and moves up in a more sustainable manner.

Numerous opportunities will come, but investor patience will be required to wait out this tough period and for sector volatility to “settle” down. This is still an embryonic industry and it is going through a painful retracement and consolidation phase.

Rewards come to those investors who are patient and do not follow the crowd

Aspiring investors need to acquire and nurture patience. Historical data clearly shows that more money is made MISSING the downside than catching the upside. As I read my e-mails from readers, I get the feeling that people really want to buy solar stocks and ride them into a bright future. Many times I get the sense that they are afraid, that if they delay, they will miss the chance to profit from the solar industries bright future. This is NOT true. There will be plenty of time and many advances and declines in the future. Be patient, look for the strongest stocks and try not to get swept up in the crowd, because the crowd is always wrong.

Evergreen Solar’s new line of ES-A black-framed String Ribbon panels will be available for viewing throughout Solar Expo at the company’s booth located in Hall 5, B3.1.

The ES-A line of panels deliver more electricity with the least environmental impact of any solar panel currently available. The ES-A series panels feature the best power tolerance currently available in the industry and String Ribbon panels received high rankings in recent TÜV and Photon performance tests. All Evergreen Solar panels are manufactured using its proprietary silicon wafer technology which is the most environmentally-friendly process in the industry giving them the smallest carbon footprint and quickest energy payback of any panel ever made.

Installation of the new black-framed ES-A series panels is identical to former panels with silver frames. Evergreen Solar recommends the use of black anodized mounting clamps to ensure a homogenous appearance of the system.

First Solar to Supply Modules for Australia’s Largest Solar PV Installation Project at Adelaide Showground Will Highlight Advanced Photovoltaic Technology

TEMPE, Ariz.–April 29 2009 –First Solar, Inc. (finance.yahoo.com/q?s=fslr”>Nasdaq: FSLR) announced today that it will supply photovoltaic (PV) modules to Solar Shop Australia, Pty Ltd. (Solar Shop), for a 1 megawatt (MW) DC rooftop project. The solar power system, installed on six separate buildings at the Adelaide Showground in South Australia, will be the largest PV installation in the country. The rooftop system is being commissioned by the Royal Agricultural and Horticultural Society of South Australia.

First Solar is the world’s largest manufacturer of thin film solar modules. The Company recently announced that it has produced 1 gigawatt of its PV modules since beginning commercial production. In addition, First Solar has the lowest manufacturing cost in the industry, having broken the $1 per watt price barrier by reducing its manufacturing cost to 98 cents.

Solar Shop, in an alliance partnership with building and engineering company Build Environs Pty Ltd., will design and construct the 1 MW installation, which is expected to displace approximately 1500 tons of CO2 every year. Construction is anticipated to begin immediately and is expected to be completed by the third quarter of 2009. The power produced by the solar installation will be used predominantly at the Adelaide Showground site, displacing power generated from conventional sources.

Veeco’s new FastLine platform is designed for high throughput, low cost of ownership production of CIGS (copper, indium, gallium and selenium) solar cells.

FPL Group Signs Solar Power Supply Agreement with SunPower Corp.

JUNO BEACH, Fla.–April 23 2009 –FPL Group (finance.yahoo.com/q?s=FPL”>NYSE: FPL) and Silicon Valley’s SunPower Corp. (NASDAQ: SPWRA) (NASDAQ: SPWRB) today announced a supply agreement for SunPower’s high-efficiency solar panels and its SunPower® Tracker technology beginning in 2010 through 2012. In addition, SunPower has separately committed to locating a research and development center in Florida if the state continues its robust solar program.

Under the terms of the agreement, SunPower will supply its high-efficiency solar photovoltaic panels and proprietary tracking systems to FPL Group subsidiaries Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) and NextEra Energy Resources.

“Our agreement with SunPower for competitively priced panels and systems represents a key milestone in the execution of our solar strategy. For NextEra Energy Resources, this agreement will further advance our solar development efforts in key markets such as Colorado, California, Arizona, and New Jersey. In addition, assuming continued support by Florida’s legislative and regulatory leadership for the deployment of solar power in Florida, this agreement benefits the state through the creation of more clean energy jobs and will help to ensure that our utility customers in Florida will get the best pricing and technology available for solar projects. SunPower will also locate a research and development center employing up to 50 employees in Florida if the state government continues to support the deployment of additional solar energy. SunPower will work with FPL and the state to identify a suitable location for such a facility. Continued strong demand in Florida also could lead to manufacturing and distribution centers for solar panels and tracking systems being located in the state as well.

Florida Projects

SunPower is currently working with FPL to build its DeSoto and Space Coast Next Generation Solar Energy Centers, which is bringing commercial-scale solar photovoltaic power to Florida for the very first time.

At 25 megawatts, the DeSoto plant, currently under construction, will be the largest photovoltaic solar facility in the nation when it is completed at the end of this year. The DeSoto Next Generation Solar Energy Center will use 90,000 photovoltaic panels on 180 acres of land and provide enough electricity to power more than 3,500 homes, which is more than 20 percent of the population in DeSoto County.

Common on rooftops, solar photovoltaic is the technology most people envision when they think of solar energy. Photovoltaic panels convert sunlight directly into electricity, which can be fed onto the electrical grid without the need of a turbine generator. Technological advances are now making photovoltaic panels practical on a large scale.

The DeSoto Next Generation Solar Energy Center will use SunPower’s solar panels, the highest-efficiency solar that is commercially available today, with its proven Tracker technology. The Tracker automatically follows the sun’s movement throughout the day, increasing sunlight capture by up to 25 percent over similar fixed systems. The facility is providing significant economic benefits to DeSoto County, creating more than 200 jobs during peak construction and providing more than $2 million in annual tax revenues by the end of 2010 to help boost the local economy.

The Space Coast Next Generation Solar Energy Center will also use SunPower’s high-efficiency solar panels and will commercially deploy its latest solar panel technology. First Solar Secures Financing for 53 Megawatt Solar Power Plant in Germany
Former Military Land Being Remediated, Converted to Renewable Energy Resource

TEMPE, Ariz.–April 21 2009 –First Solar, Inc. (finance.yahoo.com/q?s=fslr”>Nasdaq: FSLR) and Juwi Holding AG today announced they have secured financing for a 53 megawatt (MW) DC photovoltaic (PV) power plant near the German city of Cottbus.

More than 80 percent of the required project capital is financed through non-recourse debt from a consortium of banks. First Solar and Juwi intend to sell the majority of the project after its completion. Construction of the project began in January 2009, and the first 15MW have been completed. The remaining 38MW are scheduled to be completed by the end of 2009.

The project is being constructed on 162 hectares of land that is part of the Soviet Army’s former 26,000 hectare Lieberose training area north of Cottbus in eastern Germany. The project’s low cost enables the required return to fund an attractive land lease for the State of Brandenburg. The lease, in turn, finances the environmental cleanup of this former military zone, which is littered with tons of land mines, grenades and other munitions.

Matthias Platzeck, minister president of the German state government of Brandenburg, where Lieberose is located, said the project is a model for the conversion of former military land to productive use. “This kind of project helps us heal the scars of the Cold War and meet our ambitious targets for renewable energy production at the same time,” he said.

“First Solar’s mission is to enable a world powered by clean, affordable solar electricity,” said Stephan Hansen, managing director, First Solar GmbH. “This project alone is expected to displace approximately 35,000 tons of C02 emissions a year. But we are particularly proud of this project because it adds an additional element to ‘clean.’ Not only will the project produce clean electricity, but it will also result in the removal of hazardous munitions from this project site.”

Upon completion, the PV power plant will consist of approximately 700,000 modules and is projected to be the largest in Germany—producing enough power to provide for the annual electricity needs of more than 14,000 homes—and the second largest worldwide.

“The sheer size of the project helps us achieve economies of scale that are a significant factor in helping PV energy become competitive with fossil fuels and to be able to provide an increasing contribution to national renewable energy targets,” said Hansen.

Brandenburg Economics Minister Ulrich Junghanns said the project underlines the state’s credentials as an energy producer. “The Lieberose project will shine far and wide and help Brandenburg solidify its top billing as a center of solar power production,” he said.

Matthias Willenbacher, Juwi chief executive, said, “Large projects like this one demonstrate that solar power is already capable of making significant contributions to addressing climate change.” With this project, Juwi, using First Solar modules, has developed the three largest PV power plants in Germany.

First Solar to Build 48 Megawatt Photovoltaic Power Plant for Sempra Generation in Nevada

The Solar Project Would Be the Largest PV Installation in North America

TEMPE, Ariz.–April 15 2009 –First Solar, Inc. (finance.yahoo.com/q?s=fslr&d=t”>Nasdaq: FSLR ) today announced it has executed an agreement to build a 48 megawatt (MW) AC ground-mounted photovoltaic (PV) power plant for Sempra Generation. This project would expand the 10MW AC power plant First Solar completed for Sempra Generation in 2008, which is located near Boulder City, Nev.

First Solar will design, engineer and construct the PV power plant. The Company expects to begin construction in 2009. Once construction is completed in 2010, the combined 58MW AC project is expected to be the largest PV power plant in North America.

Sempra Generation will own and operate the PV power plant. The agreement is conditioned upon Sempra Generation executing a power purchase agreement with a utility customer for the electricity generated by the PV power plant and applicable state and local regulatory approvals.

“Renewable energy is a critical component of the world’s energy mix, and small, more affordable wind energy will be a key new energy alternative,” said Frank Greco, CEO of Southwest Windpower, based in Flagstaff. “This new capital funding will allow us to expand our markets, helping to bring cost-effective small wind energy to new residential, commercial, and off-grid customers.”

The company did not publicly break down the investment amount for each firm participating in the funding round, the capital for which will help Southwest Windpower develop new markets, grow its sales offices in Europe, and expand in Asia. The funds also will help expand the company’s product line to develop even more efficient wind systems. Southwest Windpower has grown 3.5 times in annual sales volume over the last 4-year period at a Compound Annual Growth Rate of nearly 37%.

Much of the growth will center on the market expansion and continued enhancement of Skystream, a residential-scale wind generator that produces electricity up to 60 percent cheaper than retail electricity, bringing renewable energy options to residential consumers and commercial outlets. Skystream’s unique plug-and-play design allows the user to connect directly to the electric grid. For a residential home, Skystream can provide anywhere from 40 – 90% of the home’s electricity, depending on their consumption and wind resource. Southwest Windpower is developing new applications for the Skystream system, including commercial uses such as powering light poles for parking lots or municipalities and multiple unit installations for remote electrification.

“The new federal stimulus incentives and the company’s product performance improvements enable Southwest Windpower to offer renewable electricity at attractive rates in different regions of the country,” said Kevin Skillern, managing director and leader of venture capital at GE Energy Financial Services. “In many applications, Southwest Windpower offers the most economic distributed renewable generation technology, and GE is helping the company accelerate adoption of that technology.”

The US economic stabilization and fiscal stimulus laws enacted in late 2008 and early 2009, which allow consumers and small businesses to take a 30% tax credit off the installed cost of a wind turbine, are expected to fuel Southwest Windpower’s continued growth. The American Wind Energy Association predicts the federal incentives, on top of a growing number of state incentives, could help the small-turbine market grow 30-fold in as few as five years.

First Solar Completes Acquisition of OptiSolar’s Photovoltaic Project Pipeline

Schaeffer’s Sentiment Snapshot: Solarfun Power Holdings Co., Ltd. (SOLF) Erases Earnings-Related Losses

CINCINNATI—-Options speculators had increasingly high hopes ahead of Solarfun Power Holdings Co., Ltd.’s (NASDAQ: SOLF) recent turn in the earnings spotlight. During the past couple of weeks, speculators on the International Securities Exchange (ISE) have bought to open more than 11 times as many calls than puts on the Chinese solar concern. Compared to similar readings taken during the past year, the security’s skyscraping 10-day call/put volume ratio of 11.18 ranks in the 76th percentile. Simply put, options players on the ISE have scooped up SOLF calls at a faster pace only about a quarter of the time during the past 52 weeks.

Most of the optimistic options activity of late is seemingly centered on the equity’s April 5 call, which has added about 1,300 positions during the past 10 trading sessions. What’s more, despite Solarfun’s disappointing earnings report (we’ll get to that in just a minute), the position’s popularity has continued today. In early afternoon trading, the April 5 call has already seen roughly 2,200 contracts change hands on open interest of fewer than 1,500.

First Solar Produces 1 Gigawatt of Clean Solar Electricity

TEMPE, Ariz.–March 20 2009 –First Solar, Inc., (finance.yahoo.com/q?s=fslr”>Nasdaq:FSLR) today announced that it has produced 1 gigawatt (GW) of its advanced solar modules since beginning commercial production in early 2002.

It took the Company more than six years to produce its first 500 megawatts (MW) and eight months to produce its second, creating today’s 1GW total. By the end of this year, the Company has announced it will have the capacity to produce more than 1GW per year— the equivalent of an average-sized nuclear power plant.

“This volume allows us to rapidly reduce manufacturing costs, thereby furthering our mission of making solar power an affordable alternative to conventional energy sources,” said Bruce Sohn, First Solar president. “We appreciate the many contributions our associates have made in reaching this 1GW milestone and are grateful for all their hard work.”

First Solar began production in Perrysburg, Ohio, with a single manufacturing line and approximately 150 associates in 2002. By the end of 2009, the Company’s solar modules will come from 23 manufacturing lines on three continents and employing more than 4,000 associates. Revenue up 51 % and EBIT more than doubled – moderate outlook for 2009 due to non-recurring effects

Munich, March 20, 2009 – CENTROSOLAR Group AG is able to announce record levels of revenue and earnings for the 2008 financial year. Consolidated revenue showed above-target growth of 51 % in 2008, to a new company record of EUR 332.6 million (2007: EUR 220.3 million). EBITDA grew by 43 % to EUR 21.4 million. There was a 152 % rise in EBIT to EUR 12 million (2007: EUR 4.8 million). Earnings per share went up from EUR 0.10 to EUR 0.31.

Thanks to its strong position in the market for the more highly subsidised roof systems, CENTROSOLAR expects sales volume to continue rising in 2009, though the current trend in wafer, cell and module prices is likely to keep the overall revenue volume down to the level of the previous year. The optimization program now under way, the ramp-up of production at Itarion and above all the reduction in inventories in the first quarter will place a burden of non-recurring expenses on the cost side. The operating result, while still remaining positive, is therefore forecast to show a short-term dip compared with the previous year. Due to the financial and economic crisis the forecast for 2009 regarding earnings and financial position is exposed to an exceptionally high level of uncertainty.

The groundwork being performed in 2009 will help to hoist the profit margin from operations permanently above current levels from 2010 on, thanks to the leaner structures created and more attractive purchasing terms for solar cells.

Detailed information on 2008 and outlook for 2009According to the full-year results announced today, CENTROSOLAR Group AG succeeded in increasing its annual revenue beyond the target level, from EUR 220.3 million for the previous year to a new record figure of EUR 332.6 million (+51 %). The export ratio was increased from 33% to 54%.

Because CENTROSOLAR Group AG has decided against entering into long-term purchase agreements for cells, it was not quite able to maintain its gross margin on revenue at the previous level in view of the difficult conditions in the procurement market, and this ratio fell from 21.0% to 19.3 %. Improved efficiency in the areas of distribution costs and overheads compensated for this downturn almost in full, with the result that the EBITDA operating margin remains between 6 and 7%. The higher year-on-year operating depreciation and amortisation of EUR 3.2 million (2007: EUR 1.7 million) was counterbalanced by the fall in IFRS 3 depreciation from EUR 8.6 million to EUR 6.2 million, with the result that EBIT more than doubled to EUR 12 million in 2008, compared with EUR 4.8 million in the previous year. EPS accordingly rose from EUR 0.10 to EUR 0.31 last year, despite the dilutive effect of the capital increase.

Solar Integrated Systems segment
The Solar Integrated Systems business segment, which concentrates mainly on roofs of residential and industrial properties, posted revenue of EUR 241 million, representing a rise of +44% compared with the previous year. The main driving force behind this growth was the expansion in the group’s operations in Spain, France and Italy. The proportion of export revenue virtually doubled from 25% to 49%. The high cell purchasing prices experienced under the short-term procurement strategy in the first half and the write-down of inventories at the end of the second half of the year nevertheless eroded the gross margin, with the result that the segment’s operating profitability fell short of expectations despite improved efficiency in personnel and other expenses, and EBITDA slipped to EUR 8.2 million (previous year EUR 9.5 million). An optimization program to enhance sales and reduce costs of distribution and overheads has therefore now been implemented.

Solar Key Components segment
External revenue for the Solar Key Components segment was boosted by 74 %, from EUR 52.4 million in the previous year to EUR 91.4 million. This rate of increase, which is way above the industry average, was made possible by the increase in manufacturing capacity for solar glass since 2007, in conjunction with the successful marketing of special solutions for roof mounting systems. EBITDA for this segment even rose by 140 %, from EUR 5.6 million in the previous year to EUR 13.3 million in 2008.

Outlook
More restricted access to financing and the lower payment tariffs for ground-mounted systems will hold back the growth of the photovoltaic market in 2009. CENTROSOLAR itself actually expects to maintain volume growth at a high level in 2009 thanks to its focus on roof systems, which attract higher subsidies internationally, and the easing of the situation on procurement markets. The current decline in wafer, cell and module prices will, however, reduce the impact of this volume growth on revenue. Overall, CENTROSOLAR therefore expects to post a similarly high level of revenue for 2009 as in the record-breaking year of 2008. 2009 will, however, bring non-recurring costs for the Solar Integrated Systems segment. The optimization program now under way, the production ramp-up of the new Itarion solar cell plant and the reduction in inventories in the first quarter of 2009, possibly combined with further write-downs if prices continue to fall, will nevertheless put a strain on the operating result in the short term. On the other hand leaner structures and more attractive purchasing terms for solar cells will pave the way for a rise in the profit margin from operations permanently above current levels from 2010 on. The continuation of the joint venture with Qimonda Solar GmbH should likewise be clarified shortly, removing the uncertainty that may be depressing the share price.
