Eco-Dating: It’s a Green Affair

Some people, when seeking their perfect mate, will look for a physical type (hello, tall-dark-and-handsome!) while others confine their search to list of abbreviations (DWM seeks SWF who likes FPS, RTS, WOW, and online RPGs).  What?  But most commonly, people look for those who are physically attractive, mentally stimulating, and share at least a few common interests, such as religion, literature, sports, etc.  Believe it or not, there are now a lot of ways to find that perfect stranger by seeking out websites that are geared towards a type (there’s even a dating site for married people…ick).  And if what you’re looking for is a special someone who shares your passion for the planet, your ken for conservancy, and your stamina for sustainability, then a good place to start is on one of the many websites devoted to matching up green singles.

There are quite a few options for greenies trolling for love, from Green Passions to EcoDater to Planet Earth Singles (just to name a few).  Each offers slightly different fare when it comes to search options and specializations, but you can generally expect to find other single people who are not only interested in finding a love match, but who are also committed to preventing pollution, emissions, animal cruelty, etc., as well as supporting sustainable local farming, green governance, clean energy, and nature conservancy.  They may also like hiking, biking, and driving electric cars.  Or eating organic.  In truth, there are all kinds of modifiers you can choose when making your own profile or searching for others, so check out one or all of these sites in your quest for green love.

While online dating has made it easier than ever to find your lifelong mate with just a click, some people still like to do things the old-fashioned way.  If you find yourself eager to date a like-minded eco-lover but feel that the point-and-click match-making of online dating makes the experience less personal (and potentially dangerous), there are still ways to meet the Earth-conscious man or woman you’ve been looking for.  Joining a club, volunteering for a non-profit organization, attending lectures, or participating in community events are all ways to meet new people who are just as interested in planetary affairs as you are.  And meeting your future mate over a pile of compost could be a pretty funny story to tell your grandkids one day.

But however you meet your green date, you will no doubt want to ensure their sincerity, so have them propose an eco-friendly date to see if they can live up to your standards.  A night on the town in their SUV certainly won’t cut the mustard, but if you’re lucky, maybe you’ll end up riding a bicycle built for two over to the local vegan eatery (which runs on solar power), and then throwing a blanket on the grass to stargaze the night away.  Like any date, it could go either way, but at least you’ll have a better chance of finding your green mate if you search by eco-friendly channels and take your time deciding.
