Heat Pumps – Environment Friendly Energy Solution

Heat pump can be called a ‘Green Device’. It is a device used to transfer heat from one place to another by using energy source.
Heat Pumps find application in both heating and cooling machines like air conditioners and refrigerators, and heating furnaces.

Heat Pumps are basically Heat engines. Heat pumps take the heat from low temperature location (source), transfer to the high temperature location (sink). They gather heat from the environment like air, water, ground or even industrial waste and transfer it to an establishment where heating is required. Heat Pumps are reversible heat engines.

Types of Heat Pumps And Their Advantages

1.    Geothermal heat pump is a kind of heat pump wherein the heat generated from the earth’s surface, is utilised. The heat obtained is then compressed at a high pressure. The compressed heat is released for being used as heating and cooling solution for establishments. They exchange heat with the ground. They are able to extract heat even from cold with air.

Benefits:
•    Energy efficient and uses far less energy to provide heating and cooling when compared to other resources such as natural gas or propane.
•    It can be used even in very low temperatures.
•    It is free from environmental emissions like methane.
•    Lower costs in terms of maintenance and installation.
•    Operation involves no energy loss.

2.     Air Source Heat Pump

These pumps utilise air to provide heating or cooling function. Heat is obtained using an evaporator. Condenser warms the air and supplies to the establishment.
Various kinds of air Source Heat pumps are Air to Air, and Split System.

Benefits of Air Source Heat Pump
•    The installation costs are really low as compared to geothermal heat pumps.
•    Operation of the system makes no noise pollution
•    Does not require any ventilation while running
•    This kind of heat also requires no fuels hence no emission into the environment

Thus summing up we can say that COP or Coefficient of Performance of Heat Pumps is high; generally it is 300 to 350%. Normally 3.5 units of energy are produced with an input of 1 unit. They require natural resources like and air, and ground heat unlike other devices, which operate on fuels. Heat Pumps are free from CO2 emissions, thus making them environment friendly.
