House as a System

The building and the human body are similar in functioning. In order to retain health and comfort, we all balance our body temperature. Our homes need to maintain the balance just like our bodies. Our houses also breathe like us. The walls, roofs, windows, doors and foundations are the most important parts of the building as they adjust the temperature of the house.
For the energy efficient working of whole house as a system we have to consider all the components together.Any change to one component affects the others.
House should work to make use of the adjacent environment. Different climate need different type of building plans for projects. If houses will made according to need of the different climates then they will result in more efficient home building.
Temperature, moisture and wind are nature’s distinctiveness which affect us and also affect our homes to the same level.
The basic factors that houses should have are:
• Control of heat, air, and water vapor flow
• Control rain and water penetration.
• Manage light and solar radiation
• Control of noise transmission between rooms.
• Houses should be durable, strong, and rigid.
• Economical to construct and maintain.
• Meet the emotional needs of residents.
• Fit to the surrounding climate.
Here are a few examples which show how one component affects the other:
High-efficiency heating system will not run without adequate weatherstripping around windows and doors.
If windows are not properly sealed or insulated then they will not save your house from condensation problems whether they are new high efficiency windows or not.
Air leakage can affect your home’s durability. Warm and moist air from the leaking in the wall cavity can result in condensation.
In an airtight constructive home without ventilation system, moisture and pollutants can grow and develop air quality problems. Constant moisture in poorly ventilated houses can turn into condensation and mould growth
The fresh air in a house can be supplied by opening a window or by breaks and leaks present in the home. Such uncontrolled ventilation can cause high heating cost and cold drafts.
