How Optical Companies are Going Green

These days, having a green lifestyle is something to boast about! Millions of individuals and businesses are jumping on the conservation bandwagon, eager to help preserve the quality of the planet for generations to come.  A notable area of advancement lies within the optical industry. Optical companies have come to the realization that the hot trend of sustainable eyewear is not likely to disappear quickly. There are several ways in which optical companies are ensuring sustainable practices. These involve everything from recycled frames, donating used eyewear, and using sustainable advertising.

Recycled Frames

To make glasses eco-friendly, companies have replaced traditional frame materials with recycled metal and plastics. Companies that are truly serious about maintaining sustainable practices strive to earn the Underwriters Laboratories Environment Claims Validation. A business is only able to receive the distinguished ULE Validation if its products are made from at least 95 percent recycled material. Modo Eyewear’s new Eco line of glasses is a recipient of the ULE Claims Validation. Modo Eco Eyewear prides itself on creating stylish and environmentally friendly glasses that customers can afford without sacrifice.

Donating Glasses

Manufacturing glasses frames from recycled metal and plastics provides a wonderful opportunity for optical businesses to give back to Mother Earth, but there are many other ways that such companies are contributing to the environmental effort.  Optical companies are helping the environment by donating unused frames to developing countries.  Not only are companies donating leftover frames from display cases, but some are going a step further by organizing community drives. Other companies have begun donating a portion of all profits to an environmental charity, taking their environmental responsibility a step further.

Sustainable Advertising

Although many companies rely on catalogues and brochures as a means of drawing customers in, optical companies are doing their part to minimize the damage to the environment. Many companies are using recycled paper for all printings, and are working to use e-files as much as possible.  Companies have addressed their shipping methods as well, minimizing packaging and using recycled materials.   As the economy begins to improve, more and more companies are doing their part to focus on sustainability, and reduce their carbon footprints.
