Everybody has a sort of personal SEO situation when it comes to quality of life and food. One of the reasons people are constantly tinkering with their own personal environments is the fact that they feel a constant subconscious need for improvement. The real reasons for this need may not be obvious, and in some cases will only make sense to the individual.
Defining your needs for yourself
You don’t really need to conduct a sort of in-depth personal psychoanalysis to define your own personal needs. You do, however, need to be able to identify how to deal with these needs. Many people underestimate the range and scope of personal needs, and then make the additional mistake of assuming they can simply go into a shop and buy what they want to deal with these needs.
Tinkering with your personal environment is very much like gardening. A whole range of personal tastes and ideas is involved in gardening, and the idea is to achieve an overall environmental effect, incorporating personal designs and ideas.
It’s a matter of recorded fact that people living in bland, uninteresting environments are always confirmed tinkerers with those environments. Another common issue is eating bland uninteresting food in a bland uninteresting environment, a very good reason for tinkering.
The simplest and cheapest approach to giving an environment of this type a complete makeover is growing food plants. Many food plants, like tomatoes, flowering herbs and others are very decorative indoors and outside. Any gardener will tell you (whether you ask them or not) that gardening is a fascinating occupation and a lot of fun. It actually is. You don’t have to be growing giant redwoods in your bedroom or turning your bathroom into a jungle to have fun gardening. You can either use outdoor space or simply use pots to achieve this.
The home food garden basics – pots and plants
Another major benefit of growing food at home is that you can also manage space very well. A simple self watering pot or little rectangular planter can grow practically anything.
You need:
- Good self watering pots, preferably not having the holes on the side, which affect how water is distributed through the pot.
- A good all-purpose, non-messy type of fertilizer, preferably dry materials and easy to use.
- A reasonably sunny space to put the plants.
Important:
- It’s definitely best to buy seedlings when buying food plants. It is also advisable to buy from a nursery.
- Do not grow food plants in soil you suspect to be contaminated or polluted. Use pots and clean soil instead.
The little planter pots are quite adequate for the early stages of plant growth. All these little pots need is a saucer underneath them, and regular gentle watering. As the plants get bigger, they will need to be transplanted into bigger self watering pots and you will need to add fertiliser.
Important: Only transplant plants that you know are strong and vigorous. Plant quality varies considerably, and it’s often a waste of time and space to transplant some seedlings which just don’t perform.
Have fun, and eat well!
