Increasing Energy Efficiency in Virginia

The economy is still the #1 focus of most Americans, but we still seek greater energy efficiency. During the 2009 session, Virginia’s General Assembly made its first commitment to promote energy efficiency by passing House Bill 2506 and Senate Bill 1248.

On March 30, Governor Kaine offered an amendment to Senator Northam’s SB 1248 that adds a goal of achieving 19% of our energy needs through energy efficiency by 2025. This target was the top recommendation of Governor Kaine’s Commission on Climate Change last December. He also amended Delegate Pollard’s HB 2506 to further strengthen and reinforce Virginia’s commitment to energy efficiency.

Reaching the 19% goal with energy efficiency is the cheapest, quickest, and cleanest way of meeting Virginia’s rising energy needs. More coal plants in Virginia is not an option!

The time is now in Virginia. Dominion has just requested a 6.9 percent increase in our local electricity rates–just one year after an 18 percent increase. Even with the increase, Dominion customers will pay, on average, less than customers across the nation, according to the Edison Electric Institute, but that’s not the point!

Please contact your Delegate and Senator and urge them to support amendments to strengthen cost-effective energy efficiency in HB 2506 and SB 1248.
