Passive Solar Heating

Managing the temperature of house by using the sun is called passive solar homes. Passive solar systems supports for both heating and cooling. A passive heat system heats the home completely with the sun and without any mechanical methods like fans or heaters. The goal of passive solar systems is to collect all needed heat energy and then evenly distribute it inside the house. Passive solar heating is helpful in reducing electricity bills and also good for the environment.
Passive solar lighting is one of the easiest ways to use solar energy which is found everywhere on earth without any cost. Solar energy is used to provide heat, light, electricity and mechanical power.
Passive solar heating is used for repositioning fixed energy sources in houses. South-facing windows are most useful for day lighting which allows nearly all winter sunlight into the home. North-facing windows also allow sun light but produces little glare. East and west facing windows give daylight penetration in the morning and evening respectively. However, it may cause a lot of heat entering the house during the summer.
A passive solar system provides the constant solar energy through building designs and window orientation. All solar heat comes through windows and no use of pumps, fans is required to distribute that heat. Check for the proper position of window when you are constructing a building. High efficiency insulated windows and sealed structures permit passive solar heating to cover a bigger portion of the house.
All passive techniques use building elements such as walls, windows, floors and roofs to control heat produced by solar radiation. Passive cooling reduces the effects of solar radiation by shading or allowing flow of air through convection ventilation.
For designing the buildings keep in mind to consider the optimal use of daylight. Here day lighting means the maximum use of sun light which reduces energy consumption related costs and provides a more comfortable working environment.
Two widely used passive solar technologies are the solar furnace and solar forge, but these need some external energy and they are not convenient or cost effective. Space and water heating prove to be better applications for passive use of solar energy.
