Preserve the Elixir of Life

Water is one of the prime elements on earth which is responsible for the sustenance of life. All ecosystems and habitats owe their existence to water. Over a period of time, the urbanization and other developments has resulted in excessive exploitation of ground water. The fresh water is also getting polluted to a great extent that we are at the brink of global water crisis. This needs immediate attention in order to avoid serious repercussions in the near future.

Global warming and the change of climate are the other contributing factors for the depletion of water resources. The phenomenon of climate change has made its presence felt globally in the form of serious natural disasters. While some areas are suffering from water crisis and droughts, some others are reeling under floods.

It has become very important to conserve this natural resource. It does not involve much of planning and cost. A little thought and concern will suffice. With the availability of better technology, it is even easier to save this valuable resource from depletion.

Digging of wells, ponds, lakes and reservoirs can also ensure the preservation of rain water.

Rain water harvesting is one of the best methods to conserve water.  It is a simple and economical method of conserving water. It is a method which has proved useful in replenishing the ground water table.

In this technique, the rain water that falls on the roof tops is guided and diverted to get collected in bore wells and pits to recharge the underground water so that it can be used later, whenever required.

The constructions should include the water harvesting techniques as an inherent part of their plan.

Creating awareness among the people to conserve water resources is also very important. The government and other agencies can make attempts to enlighten people about the need and ways to conserve water resources.

It is necessary that all those who are concerned with development and management of water resources from government sector, corporate world and civil society should come together and work in tandem to preserve the elixir of life.
