Save Energy, Save Money- Get Creative

We’re forever trying to save money; times are tough! To save money we put our our money in a high yield savings account. Taking action to cut back on how much energy you’re using is a great way to save the pennies and save the environment. Families all over the world are trying to use less energy; you’re recycling as much as you can or at least when you remember to, you’re traipsing around after the kids perpetually turning the lights off and you’re wrapping up in blankets instead of putting the heating on. Unfortunately, as so many of us have come to realize  the novelty and the passion of becoming an Eco warrior quickly wears off and we’re back to our old ways by the end of the week. As much as we hate to admit it, trying to save energy can be boring so we give up. What you need to do is get everyone on board and get creative.

Let out your competitive streak

What better way to get kids to do something than with a competition and the promise of a prize. Whether you’ve got a big or a small family, a bit of healthy competition can do wonders; you’ve been nagging for months for your daughter to spend less time in the shower to no avail, but add an element of competition into the mix and she’ll be in and out of that shower in 5 minutes flat. Create a family shower competition; each person’s showers are timed and the times added together at the end of the week. The winner is quite simply the person who has spent the least amount of time in the shower over the week. The winner gets a small prize, maybe they get to their favorite dinner that night or they can pick the film to watch on Saturday night; make sure your prizes don’t cost anything, or cost very little, or the money you’re saving on the bills will quickly be cancelled out with the money you’re spending on prizes.

TV Parties

If there’s something we all have in common, it’s that most evenings are spent watching TV; the prime time popular shows are guaranteed to be on nearly every TV in the area. Doesn’t that seem silly though? You and all of your neighbors are watching exactly the same show but on different televisions; why don’t watch your favorites shows together? Getting a group of your neighbors together to have TV parties is a great way to save money; take it in turns to have people over to watch the show on your televisions and have your own little get together. You’ll all be saving energy by using one television instead of 6 or 7 and you might even get to know some of the neighbors you hadn’t met before.

There are just two simple ideas to get you saving money and energy in a fun way. Once you get started on the shower competitions, you could apply it to anything; why not have a ‘who can use the least energy’ competition with your neighbors by using the new handy little energy monitors? There is a huge amount of fun and creative ways to save energy, there’ll be no stopping you soon!
