The main source of energy is the sun, which provides us heat, light and radiation. Some technology draw fuel from one form of solar energy or another, there are some technologies that directly transform the sun’s energy into electricity.
Solar electricity is produced from solar cells also known as photovoltaic cells which transform the solar radiation into electricity. “Photo” means the light and “voltaic” refers to electricity. Solar electricity is fresh, soundless, free and boundless. It plays a significant role in the present energy motivated civilization. Photovoltaic is safe technology as compared to other risky electricity generating technologies.
The common type of solar cells is based on the photovoltaic effect in which light fall on a double layered semi-conductor device and generates a photo-voltage. This voltage flow a current through an external circuit and generates helpful work.
The use of solar electricity is growing very fast, nearly 30% per year, and the cost is continuously falling because of new technologies and mass production. The possible applications and need for solar electricity is as follows:
• Because of low maintenance, long-term source of electricity, suitable for remote places e.g. satellites, remote site water pumping and lighthouses.
• Need for solar electricity arises due to its cost effective supply of power for people inaccessible from the main electricity grid
• As it is a non-polluting and silent sources of electricity e.g. tourist sites, caravans and campers
• It is needed for making a convenient and flexible source of small amounts of power e.g. calculators, watches, light meters and cameras.
Renewable energy neither will run out nor will it pollute the environment. It is also in the interest of future generations to change the thinking with regard to energy uses.
Profit of Solar Electricity:
1. Raise the value of assets.
2. Reduces electricity bills.
3. contributes in helping the environment
4. Planning permission is not required.
5. Low maintenance.
6. Extra electricity can give back to energy companies.
7. You have your own independent power source
