The time has come that we take steps to conserve the scarce energy resources and find new ways for alternative sources of energy. Comfortable lifestyle of the people demands heavy energy consumption for cooling, heating, lighting, cooking etc. The demand and consumption of energy is so high that we have an urgent need to find alternative resources. The alternative resources should be such that they are safe to be used, viable to all and easily renewable.
Such a thought has led to the invention of solar energy. The solar energy is the basic requirement of all the living things even for the smallest microbes. This is available to the world in the form of sunlight. This energy source is abundant and it is certainly not going to be out of source in the near future.
This is an environment friendly source because there will not be any harmful carbon emissions which is presently the serious matter of concern leading to the greenhouse effects and global warming.
The solar energy emitted by the sun has both heat and light. It is usually in the form of electromagnetic radiations which are converted into useable forms of energy. It is a clean source of energy. With the presently available advanced technology, this can become a viable and cost effective replacement of the grid electricity. Solar energy can be used for heating, lighting and electricity requirements effectively even in cold climates. It can be used for heating the water in the swimming pools. This energy can be used to power the vehicles like solar powered cars and solar powered airplanes also. NASA has also taken a step forward to design and successfully test an airplane powered totally by the solar energy.
The sun energy that strikes the world in one day will be sufficient to generate enough energy to meet the annual demand. This sun energy is prevalent everywhere. We need not go to the deserts or tropical regions for this.
Having said everything, it is very much required to know that to harness this energy, heavy capital cost will be incurred. But a greater acceptance and usage of the source will reduce the cost and make it a very useful source.
