Sun tunnels are also known as tubular skylights or sun tubes.
They are the environment friendly lighting solutions. They come in various sizes and lengths, depending upon the area of the room.
Sun tunnels are tubular structures made of polyester film. The outer layer is metalised. The inner layer has aluminium sola film and a laminate, which is highly reflective and resistant to ultraviolet rays. Various lenses and mirrors are so placed that the sunrays collected by the dome on the top refract the light.
The skylights harvest the sunlight. This sunlight can be used even when it is dark or when there is no sun. The tubular skylights have proven to be boon for the environment.
The advantages are discussed as follows
• Sun tunnels are the alternate energy source. They can be classified as green equipment because they do not take the toll on the environment.
• Skylights make use of sunlight, which is naturally occurring renewable resource.
• Commercial and domestic establishments can make use of sun tunnels.
• They are exploited not only for lighting, but also provide energy solutions for heating and air conditioning as well.
• They cut down the electricity costs in a major way.
• The non-renewable resources like fossil fuels; oil etc can be conserved if sun tunnels are actively employed.
• The amount of light can be regulated using a flexible tube.
• They are easy to install on almost all kinds of roofs.
• Installing sun tunnels is advantageous for plants. They are able to capture full spectrum sunlight, hence exposing them to the optimum light. This ensures healthy plants.
• It is a non-polluting source of energy.
• The natural unobstructed sunlight has a very positive impact on productivity. It enlivens and brightens up the entire set up.
• The installation of suntunnels also has a look good factor, as they look really elegant.
Thus resorting to skylights in establishments can help a great deal in conserving he environment.
