Top Tips on Drinking Greener Water

We all know the importance of keeping hydrated and many of us prefer the taste of filtered, chilled mineral water compared to water straight from the tap. However, as it is now widely known it isn’t environmentally friendly to constantly buy a supply of it in plastic bottles. Although the water industry is going some way in improving their ‘green’ credentials, reaching for the bottled water when we’re thirsty is a bad environmental choice. So, how can we benefit from great tasting water in a more environmentally friendly way?

Here are some top changes that you can make in order to make drinking water ‘greener’:

1. Invest in a water filter jug for the home – There are many home water solutions that produce great tasting, filtered water that can save you (and save the environment) from buying it in bottles. You could invest in a jug filter, which over its lifetime also works out cheaper than buying bottles from the supermarket, takes up less space in your fridge and eliminates the hassle of lifting and storing heavy bottles.

2. Install an under sink filter at home and/or work – With a water filter installed under your sink, the water is constantly filtered meaning you can have better tasting drinks and chlorine free-water to cook with. It’s a good alternative for those of us who don’t have much cupboard or fridge space to store water and you tend to not even know it’s there.

3. Switch to mains fed coolers at work – A regular feature in an office is a bottle fed water cooler. These are exceptionally bad for the environment as they require large plastic bottles that regularly need
changing. Obviously the bottles of water also require delivering and so will have a high carbon footprint before you’ve even started drinking the water from them! An alternative could be a water cooler that is plumbed straight into the buildings mains, filtering and chilling water constantly to provide a continuous supply of drinking water, without any need for plastic bottles.

4. Take water with you – Instead of buying bottles of water when you’re out and about fill up a sports bottle from your home filtered water supply and take it with you!
